Programs Overview

At La Peninsula Community Organization, Inc. (La Pen), we provide comprehensive early childhood education and family support programs designed to nurture each child’s development and strengthen the families we serve. Our work is grounded in evidence‑based practices, cultural responsiveness, and a deep commitment to the South Bronx community. We proudly offer bilingual services in English and Spanish, ensuring that every family feels welcomed, understood, and empowered.

Below is an overview of the core programs that support our children, families, and neighborhoods.

Early Childhood Education (Ages 3–5)

Our Early Childhood Education Program provides high‑quality, developmentally appropriate instruction for children ages 3 to 5. Using The Creative Curriculum, our classrooms promote school readiness by supporting growth in:

  • Language and literacy

  • Cognitive development

  • Early math and science understanding

  • Social and emotional skills

  • Physical well-being and motor development

Each classroom is staffed by a certified teacher and teacher assistant, ensuring personalized attention and a nurturing learning environment. Children receive 1,020+ hours of planned classroom instruction each year.

Head Start Services

La Pen has a long-standing history of delivering comprehensive Head Start services focused on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable families in the South Bronx. Our Head Start programming includes:

  • High-quality preschool education

  • Health and developmental screenings

  • Nutrition services

  • Family support and parent engagement

  • Mental health consultation

  • IEP- Individulal Education Plan

This holistic approach ensures children are academically, socially, and emotionally prepared for kindergarten and beyond.

Health & Wellness Program

Child well-being is at the center of our mission. Our Health & Wellness Program ensures families have access to essential screenings, consultations, and support services. Our team includes:

  • A registered nurse

  • A mental health specialist

  • A nutritionist

Children receive routine health screenings, developmental evaluations (including Brigance and TS GOLD), nutrition monitoring, and referrals for additional services when needed.

Family Support & Advocacy

Our Family Support Program ensures that parents and caregivers have the tools they need to support their children’s success. Family advocates maintain small caseloads, allowing for individualized support in areas such as:

  • Basic needs assistance

  • Housing and crisis intervention

  • Connections to community partners

  • Goal-setting and family development plans

  • Referral follow-ups to ensure services are received

We work alongside families to reduce barriers, stabilize households, and build long-term support systems.

Program Quality & Continuous Improvement

La Pen is committed to excellence. We use multiple assessment tools to maintain high program quality and guide teacher development, including:

  • ECERS environmental ratings

  • CLASS observations

  • NAEYC accreditation standards

  • Ongoing TS GOLD assessments

  • Brigance developmental screenings

These tools help ensure our classrooms remain engaging, supportive, and aligned with early childhood best practices.
